History
The glazed tiles representing arts and crafts are an emblematic element of the history of the Catalan ceramics. By tradition, they used to represent the typical professions of their epochs with original drawings made on ceramic. Between comedy and irony, almost being grotesque, the incredible variety of glazed tiles representing arts and crafts founded everywhere in Catalonia has given a lot of work to historians.
The Castle of Montsonís has been the favourite for the historians of ceramics. Albert Telese, Miquel Salomó, Francesc Farrés and Manel Sánchez presented there their book, "Les Rajoles Catalanes d'arts i oficis. Catàleg general (1630 - 1850)", (The Catalan Ceramics of Arts and Crafts. General Catalogue (1630 - 1850)". The reason: in the dinning room of the Castle, in its collection of 'ceramics of crafts', we find the only three original pieces in all Catalonia representing an image of a sculptor.
- Entering the dinning room, under the gaze of the characters represented on the pieces of the "ceramics of occupations', the visitor can imagine how it must have been to be present at a dinner with the feudal lords.
- The guidelines of conduct at the table would be, nowadays, a bit rude. To spit under the table, because that is always better than to spit on one's hand; if some flatulence escapes, one blames the dog, who cannot protest; and if one has a cold, simply one does not attend the dinner, because to blow one's nose is rude.
